Toe Pain: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatments

Toe Pain in Ridgeland, MS Also Serving Jackson, MS & Madison, MSThe foot is a complicated part of the body made up of skin and muscle tissue, nerves, bones, blood vessels, and each individual toe contains its own miniaturized network of these structures. Toe pain, therefore, can be caused by numerous injuries and ailments, and is a common problem for many people due to constant usage of the feet.

One of the most frequent causes of toe pain is osteoarthritis, which is chronic joint inflammation. The pain associated with arthritis in the toes is often described as a deep ache with a sharper stabbing feeling upon movement. Stiffness, swelling, and crookedness can also accompany the pain. Arthritis often occurs in toes that have sustained injuries, such as fractures, in the past. Women who have worn high heels for many years are also at risk of developing osteoarthritis later in life. Rheumatoid arthritis and gout are separate conditions that often have similar symptoms.

Inner and outer injuries to the toes can also cause pain. Injuries to the skin include blisters and calluses, which are caused by repeated friction from poorly-fitted shoes, as well as ingrown toenails from improper nail trimming. Bunions are a slow-growing deformity that affects the first joint of the big toe; they present as a pronounced lump on the inside of the foot. Associated pain may be due to the afore-mentioned friction while wearing shoes or may occur in conjunction with arthritis. Extreme pain and numbness which starts at the base of the toes could be a Morton's neuroma, a swelling of the nerves in that area of the foot.

Other problems that may cause toe pain include chilblains, which typically occurs during the winter months and causes the toes to become painfully inflamed and itchy, and athlete's foot, a fungus that can be transmitted in locker rooms and gyms while barefoot.

Toe pain that doesn't resolve within two weeks should be evaluated by a podiatrist to diagnose the cause and determine the best treatment.
